In this work, I would like to share my experience of working with younger students. Teaching English in elementary school has its own specifics, which I have outlined in this article.The everyday reality of recent years testifies to the increased status of a foreign language in Russian society. The modern school assumes the study of English from the second grade. Everyone knows that at the initial stage of education, the formation of the student’s personality takes place, the identification and development of his abilities, the formation of educational skills and the mastery of elements of culture and behavior. In this case, language is considered as a means of educating and developing the student’s personality, introducing him to European and his own culture, national etiquette.

The psychological characteristics of younger students give them advantages in learning a foreign language. Children of 8-10 years old absorb FL indirectly and subconsciously. The attention span is small and the focusing time is very short, but they increase with age. Younger schoolchildren have a well-developed long-term memory (what is learned is remembered for a very long time). The best stimulus for further learning for students in grades 2-4 is a sense of success. The ways of receiving and assimilating information in children are also different: visual, auditory, kinesthetic.

The experience of leading psychologists proves that at an early age the foundation of practical knowledge of a foreign language is laid. Children over 11 years old have a number of difficulties in this regard, for example, the lack of motives for learning a foreign language, the influence of their native language, etc. There is no doubt that a foreign language is easier to learn at an early age from 5 to 8 years old, when children easily and firmly memorize the material and reproduce it well. But to support the desire of kids to learn from day to day, moving in small steps, is not an easy task, and a great responsibility lies with us, teachers of a foreign language.

Working in elementary school, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of the physical development of children of 7-10 years old. Muscular development affects a child’s ability to focus on a page, line or word, which is essential for reading. It also affects the ability to hold a pencil or pen, scissors, paintbrush. In order for students to achieve fine motor coordination, as well as coordination between visual perception and mechanical movement, their hands need constant training. Young children cannot sit still for long periods of time due to a lack of control over their motor muscles. Therefore, it is advisable to give them such tasks during the lesson that would allow the children to move around the classroom (games, songs with movements, dances). Physical activity in the lesson not only helps to make the process of repeated repetition and memorization of educational material more fun and varied, but also simply to relieve stress, to give the opportunity to get up from the desk once again, which is so necessary for young students.

The principle of communicative focus:

Rule 1 – Situation selection.

Rule 3 – Participation of everyone in communication in a foreign language.

Rule 4 – Favorable conditions for communication in a foreign language.

Rule 5 – Communication of tasks.

Since junior schoolchildren still have little experience of communication in a team, and he learns not only to communicate in English, but also to communicate in a team (class), it is envisaged to rely on communication in his native language, awareness of the communicative function of a particular language unit. The implementation of this principle is carried out through a system of cognitive tasks, solving which, children “discover” the laws of their native language.
